Born in Rajasthan, Nitesh’s life took a dramatic turn in 2009. A train accident left him with a permanent leg injury and confined him to bed for months. This event could have easily broken him, but Nitesh possessed an inner strength that would soon be channeled into a different kind of victory.

It was during his time at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) that Nitesh discovered his love for badminton. Inspired by the achievements of fellow para-athlete Pramod Bhagat, Nitesh decided to pick up a racket and test his skills on the court. He honed his game by playing against able-bodied athletes, constantly pushing himself to improve.

Nitesh’s dedication paid off. In 2016, he made his competitive debut at the Para National Championships in Faridabad, Haryana. Despite being a newcomer, Nitesh impressed everyone by clinching a bronze medal. This success fueled his ambition, and the following year, he secured a silver medal in singles and a bronze in doubles at the national championships.

Nitesh’s talent wasn’t limited to the domestic circuit. In 2017, he participated in the Irish Para-Badminton International and emerged victorious, marking a significant milestone in his international career. He continued to climb the ladder of success, winning several titles at the BWF Para Badminton World Circuit and the Asian Para Games.

However, Nitesh’s biggest test was yet to come. The Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 presented a golden opportunity to showcase his talent on the world’s biggest stage. While he couldn’t secure the gold, his journey to the Tokyo Paralympics itself was an inspiration. He even managed to defeat his idol, Pramod Bhagat, in the National Championship finals that year, solidifying his position as a leading player in para-badminton.

Fast forward to Paris 2024. Nitesh arrived at the Paralympics, determined to achieve his dream. The final against Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell was a nerve-wracking affair. Nitesh dominated the first game with his impressive defense and powerful smashes, winning 21-14. However, Bethell fought back fiercely, forcing the match into a deciding third game. The tension was palpable as both players exchanged points in a close battle. Finally, after an hour and twenty minutes of intense competition, Nitesh managed to secure the victory with a score of 23-21, sending the Indian contingent into a frenzy.

Nitesh’s gold medal victory transcended the realm of sport. It became a symbol of hope and inspiration for millions of people in India. He proved that with determination and hard work, even the most challenging obstacles can be overcome. His story is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to rise above adversity and achieve greatness.

Beyond his athletic prowess, Nitesh is also a role model for aspiring para-badminton players. He actively works as a Senior Badminton Coach for the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs in Haryana, imparting his knowledge and skills to the next generation of athletes. With his dedication to the sport, Nitesh is not only a champion on the court but also a guiding light for future para-badminton stars.

Nitesh Kumar’s journey is far from over. He has set his sights on even greater accomplishments in the future. As he continues to push his boundaries and inspire others, India can expect many more golden moments from this exceptional badminton player.
