Epic had a very big impact on gaming yes but it was never a good impact. EGS has never been a good thing for gamers, and it is not a coincidence that the gaming industry kept becoming worse while Epic kept getting more and more succesful. Epic is not the only company to blame don’t get me wrong but for sure it is amongst the few ones that are to blame the most. The impact that Steam had on the industry was a lot better but unfortunately at some point every other company decided to become garbage and when almost every company in an industry decide to ruin it so much overall for the same old greedy reasons then the worst kind of content start to become more popular and the good things start to lose their effectiveness unfortunately. Steam have always been great, but many companies like Epic ruined the gaming industry (and the impact of Epic in particular started to be annoying even before Steam existed) to the point that I do not care even about Steam anymore, sadly, not because of what Valve has done, Steam have always been great, but because of the faults of many other companies who ruined gaming as a whole.
